Shower Cubicle Design
Lamplas - How design can define a product
Lamplas Ltd., a manufacturer of GRP products from County Durham, required a re-vamp of their existing shower cubicle designs, specifically aimed at the holiday chalet sector. Their existing designs were losing market share to cheaper vacuum formed products so Bigto was tasked with creating a fresh new look, while maintaining the many benefits of GRP.
The cubicle had to be designed so that it could be produced in a single mould to ensure that no joints were required in the final product, which could leak water or gather dirt. An innovative mixer valve shelf was also designed which could be attached to either of the rear corners. This allowed the shower to be left or right handed in use without creating another mould, thereby reducing tooling costs and simplifying inventory logistics.
Five designs were initially presented in 2D, as well as 3D sketch-foam models. The selected design was modelled at 1/5 scale for market assessment with a major customer. A very favourable reaction to the model resulted in Bigto producing the full scale master mould to create the cubicle, using their in-house CNC facilities.
Lamplas have now increased their workforce to meet customer demand.
